Meet the Family



Sophie is the youngest of 3 girls, just like her mommy.  We first learned that baby Sophie might be deaf during her newborn hearing screening.  After several tests, we learned that she had profound, bilateral sensorineural hearing loss.  We got her into hearing aids by 2 months of age and she was qualified for bilateral cochlear implants 6 months later.

We are a unique family as mom and two maternal aunties were fluent signers before baby Sophie was born.  Its a lucky coincidence that we take full advantage of every day.  Dad has stepped up by taking ASL courses at our local college and is now completing his second semester of instruction.  Big sisters are picking up sign at an amazing pace by learning at home and through family ASL classes taught at our local Deaf school.

We live in Honolulu, Hawaii and are hoping to network with other families with bionic babies.

Maybe you have heard of it? I am doing an update and wish to connect with families with older CI kids who do or did use sign. and your Sophie must be 11 or 12 by now?
